How to Hire a Framing Contractor: 5 Things to Check First
Start With the Frame
Framing is the part of your build nobody sees once the walls go up — and the part everything else depends on. If the frame isn't square, plumb, and solid, every trade that follows inherits the problem, and you end up paying for it twice.
So before you hand that job to anyone, it's worth slowing down to vet the crew. Below are the five things we'd tell a friend to check first — and a bit about how we hold ourselves to the same bar.
Hold Us to Every Point on This List
It's easy to write a checklist — harder to pass it. Advanced Custom Builders is fully licensed and insured, backs every project with a one-year workmanship warranty, and puts every estimate in writing, free and up front. We're proud to offer discounts for veterans and seniors, too.
Five Things to Check Before You Sign
Tap any point to jump to it, or read straight through. Each one is a question worth asking before you hire any framing contractor.
Proof They're Licensed and Insured
Don't take "yeah, we're covered" at face value — ask to see it. A legitimate framing contractor carries the proper licensing along with both liability and workers' compensation insurance, and they won't blink when you ask for documentation. This is what protects you if something goes wrong on your property or someone gets hurt on the job.
Any contractor worth hiring will happily send proof on request. If asking the question makes things awkward, that's your answer.
Work You Can Actually Look At
Ask to see completed projects — ideally ones like yours. A crew that frames single-family homes isn't necessarily set up for a multi-story apartment build, and the reverse is true too. Photos are a fine starting point, but a good contractor can point you to real projects and, more often than not, customers who'll vouch for the work.
If someone's cagey about showing you what they've built, take note. People who do solid work tend to be proud to show it off.
Someone Who Genuinely Understands Framing
This is the step most people skip, and it's the most important one. Framing is a lot more than nailing studs together. Ask how often their work passes inspection on the first try. Ask how they'd handle a wall that comes out of square, or a problem they discover mid-build. Ask what the tallest or most complex thing they've framed is.
You're listening for depth — a crew that sweats the details and can explain them in plain terms. For what it's worth, most framers around Missoula top out at three stories. We go up to six, and we pass framing inspection the first time, almost every time — the county inspector even sends people our way.
A Reputation You Can Verify
Pull up their Google reviews and read past the star rating. Are customers mentioning the things that actually matter to you — clear communication, a clean jobsite, sticking to the quote, fixing a hiccup without a fight? A handful of detailed, consistent reviews tells you more than a big number with no substance behind it. Ask for references, too, and actually call them.
"Tony is amazing and fair priced. Quality work each time so far, and great about responding to questions. I always call and always use ACB. Thanks guys!"

A Clear, Written Estimate and a Warranty
Vague pricing is a red flag. You want a free, written estimate that spells out the scope of the work, so there are no surprises when the final bill shows up. Ask what happens if they uncover hidden damage partway through — a straight shooter will stop, show you what they found, and give you an updated number before doing any extra work, rather than quietly tacking it on.
And ask about the warranty. We back our framing with a one-year workmanship warranty, and you should expect something in writing from anyone you're considering.
We Check Every Box on This List
We wrote this guide because it's exactly how we'd want to be vetted. We frame taller than most local crews, pass inspection the first time almost every time, carry full licensing and insurance, and stand behind the work with a written warranty. Hold any contractor — including us — to all five.
Schedule NowTony and his crew were incredible to work with. They did an exceptional job on our framing project. I was a little nervous contracting out framing, and Tony set all my worries aside. He has an incredible attention to detail, and all my neighbors were super impressed by the speed and quality of their work. His crew were respectful, diligent, hard workers — I would fully trust him on any project.

Hiring Questions, Answered
Ask the contractor directly for their licensing details and proof of liability and workers' compensation insurance. A reputable contractor will provide documentation without hesitation — we send ours to clients on request.
It's smart to compare — but compare scope and detail, not just the bottom-line number. The lowest bid often leaves things out that show up as change orders later. A clear, written estimate makes bids easy to compare honestly.
Ask how often their work passes inspection on the first try, what similar projects they've completed, whether they can provide references, what their written estimate covers, and what warranty they stand behind. The answers tell you a lot.
